Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, he was a leading figure of Fauvism, celebrated for his bold use of colour and fluid, expressive line. His later cut-out works, including Jazz (1947), cemented his legacy as a master of form, colour, and joyful visual invention.
