Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was an American painter and sculptor born in New York City, recognised as a founding figure of Pop Art. Drawing on comic-strip panels and commercial imagery, he created large-scale, vividly coloured paintings that challenged the boundaries between fine art and mass culture. His iconic works include Whaam! (1963), Drowning Girl (1963), and Look Mickey (1961).
