The Hollywood Sign stands on Mount Lee in Griffith Park, overlooking Los Angeles, California. Erected in 1923 as “HOLLYWOODLAND” to advertise a housing development, it was shortened to “HOLLYWOOD” during restoration in 1949. The present steel letters were installed in 1978 and each stands about 45 feet high. Los Angeles had a population of 3,898,747 at the 2020 census. The landmark remains one of the most recognisable symbols of the American film industry. Coordinates: 34.1341° N, 118.3215° W
