Makokou is a riverside town in northeastern Gabon, capital of Ogooué-Ivindo province and set on the banks of the Ivindo River amid dense rainforest. Home to around 15,000 people, it serves as the main gateway to Ivindo National Park and the surrounding forest reserves, drawing researchers and travellers into one of Central Africa's richest biodiversity hotspots. The town's location deep in the interior reflects Gabon's vast, largely untouched wilderness beyond its coast. Life here moves to the rhythm of the river and the forest.
