Pongara National Park lies just across the estuary from Libreville, where mangroves, savanna, and palm-lined Atlantic beaches meet along Gabon's coast. Established in 2002, the park protects one of Africa's largest nesting sites for leatherback sea turtles, which come ashore by the thousands each year to lay their eggs. Forest elephants and hippos roam the coastal plains, while the estuary's mangrove channels shelter fish and birdlife just minutes from the capital. A rare wilderness within sight of the city skyline.
